What comes out of a Colorado paycheck
Short answer: from each Colorado check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), Colorado state withholding, and the CO FAMLI line. Colorado uses one flat income tax rate and adds a FAMLI paid family and medical leave premium, split between worker and employer.
| Line | Rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | Set by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T) |
| Social Security | 6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000 |
| Colorado income tax | A flat 4.4% |
| CO FAMLI | 0.44% of wages until yearly pay reaches $184,500. |
From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.
How Colorado withholding is worked out in 2026
Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the flat rate and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.
- The withholding formula subtracts a standard deduction of $5,500 a year before the rates apply.

Colorado disability, paid leave and other state deductions
These lines are not income tax, so they show separately on a Colorado stub. Each one is worked out from gross wages.
- CO FAMLI (Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance): 0.44% of wages until yearly pay reaches $184,500.
Worked example: one Colorado paycheck
Two common cases, paid every two weeks, filing single, no pre-tax deductions, 2026 rules: $20 an hour for 80 hours, and a $60,000 yearly salary. These numbers come from the same engine as the calculator, not from a rounded rule of thumb.
| Line | $20/hour | $60,000 salary |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $1,600.00 | $2,307.69 |
| Federal income tax | $108.15 | $193.08 |
| Social Security | $99.20 | $143.08 |
| Medicare | $23.20 | $33.46 |
| Colorado income tax | $61.09 | $92.23 |
| CO FAMLI | $7.04 | $10.15 |
| Take-home pay | $1,301.32 | $1,835.69 |

|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,153.85 | $917.84 |

Reading the tax lines on a Colorado pay stub
Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a Colorado stub, and what each one is.
- FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
- OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
- MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
- CO SIT or CO W/H: Colorado state income tax.
- CO FAMLI: Colorado Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance.
Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.
Why your actual check may not match
- Your W-4 (plus any Colorado state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
- Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
- Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
- Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
