Take-home pay $807.89 per weekly check in California.

An estimate from what you entered, using 2026 federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax withholding for a Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T), plus the state’s disability or paid leave line where it has one. City, county and school district taxes are not included. Not tax advice.

How to calculate hourly pay after taxes

Your hourly rate is not what lands in your bank. Four steps turn it into take-home pay. The hourly paycheck calculator above runs all four for you.

  1. 1

    Work out gross pay

Hourly rate times hours worked in the pay period. Overtime goes on its own line at the higher rate.

  2. 2

    Take out pre-tax deductions

401(k) and many health plans come out first, so less of your pay is taxed.

  3. 3

    Take out taxes

Federal income tax (based on pay, pay frequency and W-4), Social Security 6.2%, Medicare 1.45% (IRS Pub 15), then state income tax.

  4. 4

    Read your take-home pay

What is left is net pay: the number that should match your bank deposit.

A quick example

Say you earn $20 an hour and work 40 hours in a week. Gross pay is $20 × 40 = $800.00. In Texas, after federal tax, Social Security and Medicare, you keep about $684.72. The table below shows the same check in other states.

No state income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.

What an hourly pay stub shows

  • Rate and hours on their own line, with overtime on a second line at its own rate.
  • Gross pay for the period, then each tax as its own line: Federal Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare, State Income Tax.
  • Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health insurance, before the taxes they lower.
  • Year-to-date totals next to every line. Landlords and lenders use them to check that pay is steady.
  • Net pay, the amount that should match your bank deposit.

Mistakes that throw off your hourly paycheck estimate

  • Entering one week of hours for a check that covers two weeks.
  • Typing 7.30 for 7 hours 30 minutes. It is 7.5.
  • Leaving out 401(k) or health insurance, which lowers your taxable pay.
  • Picking the wrong filing status. Use what your W-4 says, not how you file your return.
  • Counting overtime hours as regular hours instead of entering them in Overtime Hours.

Why more hours can mean a bigger tax share

Withholding is worked out per check, as if you earned that amount all year. So a big week can show a bigger tax share than a normal week. It usually evens out when you file your return.

Tips for a closer take-home pay estimate

  • Use the hours from one pay period, not one week, if you’re paid every two weeks. Or use the biweekly paycheck calculator.
  • Worked more than 40 hours in a week? The overtime calculator handles time and a half and shows how much tax comes out of overtime.
  • Check your last real stub for pre-tax deductions and add them here.

Social Security stops for the year once your wages reach $184,500 (2026, wage base). This calculator shows one check with no earlier pay in the year.

FAQ

How do I calculate my paycheck from my hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours in the pay period. That is gross pay. Take out pre-tax deductions, then federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and state tax. What is left is your take-home pay.

How much is $20 an hour after taxes?

For one weekly check of 40 hours, filing single with no pre-tax deductions: about $684.72 in Texas and $660.64 in California. Your W-4, state and deductions change it, so enter your own numbers above.

How much tax comes out of an hourly paycheck?

It depends on your pay, state and W-4. Social Security and Medicare are fixed shares. Federal and state income tax change with your pay. Enter your details to see your own split.

How do I figure my hourly pay after taxes?

Divide your take-home pay for the period by the hours you worked. If you take home $500 for 40 hours, your hourly pay after taxes is $12.50.

Can I add head of household or extra withholding?

Yes. Pick Head of household as your W-4 filing status. Put any extra amount from W-4 Step 4(c) in Extra Withholding per Check. It is added to federal income tax on each check, as IRS Pub 15-T says.

How do I turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by 2,080. That is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. At $20 an hour that is $41,600 a year before taxes.

Does working more hours put me in a higher tax bracket?

Only the extra dollars are taxed at the higher rate. Your whole check is not. Withholding on a big week can look high, but your return settles the real amount.

How do I count minutes when I calculate pay for hours worked?

Divide the minutes by 60. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75. Add up every day in the pay period and enter the total.

Why is my real check different from the calculator?

Your employer may withhold extra, take local taxes, or take other deductions. On a stub the taxes are worked out for you; to type the amounts from your real check, add the tax & W-4 edits add-on ($1.00/stub).

Can I use this hourly pay calculator for part-time work?

Yes. Enter the hours you actually worked in the pay period, even if it is 12 or 25.

Does the calculator include local or city tax?

Not yet. City, county and school district taxes are left out, so a check in a place with local tax will be a little lower.

Is this hourly paycheck calculator free?

Yes. No account and no email. You only pay if you turn the result into a pay stub.
