How to calculate overtime pay
Under federal law (FLSA), most hourly workers earn overtime for every hour over 40 in a workweek. The overtime rate is at least time and a half. The overtime calculator above does the math in three steps.
- 1
Find your overtime rate
Regular hourly rate × 1.5. $20.00 becomes $30.00.
- 2
Multiply by overtime hours
$30.00 × 10 hours = $300.00 overtime pay.
- 3
Add it to regular pay
Regular pay plus overtime pay is gross pay. Taxes come out of the total.
Workweek, not pay period
A workweek is a fixed, repeating 168 hours: seven days in a row. Overtime is counted one week at a time. Two weeks can’t be averaged. Work 50 hours one week and 30 the next, and the 50-hour week still earns 10 hours of overtime.

Take half of your hourly rate and add it back. Half of $18 is $9, so time and a half is $27. For double time, just double the rate.

Overtime tax: how much comes out of your check
No. Overtime is not taxed at a special rate. It is withheld on like regular wages: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state tax. So why does the tax look bigger? Withholding is worked out as if you earned that bigger check every pay period. That can push part of it into a higher bracket for that one check. When you file your return, the tax is settled on your real yearly income.
How much is overtime taxed?
Enter your overtime hours in the overtime calculator above. It shows the federal, Social Security, Medicare and state lines for the whole check, so you can see the dollar amount, not a guess.
For 2025 to 2028 there is a federal income tax deduction for the FLSA overtime premium, taken on your yearly return. Your check does not change. See the no tax on overtime calculator.

Who gets overtime
Most hourly workers are covered by the federal overtime rule. Some jobs are exempt. Your employer or your state labor office can tell you if you are covered.
States with daily overtime
Some states also pay overtime for long days, not only long weeks. Each row links to that state’s labor department.
| State | Daily overtime rule | Double time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | Time and a half over 8 hours in a workday (up to 12), and for the first 8 hours on the 7th day in a row in a workweek | Over 12 hours in a workday; over 8 hours on the 7th day in a row | California DIR (Labor Commissioner) |
| Alaska | Time and a half over 8 hours in a day or 40 in a workweek. Employers with fewer than 4 employees are exempt | Not required | Alaska Labor Standards and Safety |
| Colorado | Time and a half over 12 hours in a workday or 40 in a workweek, whichever pays more, unless an exemption applies | Not required | Colorado COMPS Order #40 |
| Nevada | Time and a half over 8 hours in a workday for employees paid under 1.5 times the Nevada minimum wage, unless they agree to four 10-hour days a week. Over 40 hours in a week for everyone covered | Not required | Nevada NRS 608.018 |
The calculator counts overtime hours you enter. For daily overtime, add up the daily overtime hours yourself and enter them.
Holidays and weekends
Federal law does not require extra pay for holiday or weekend work. Those hours earn overtime only when they take you over 40 in the workweek (DOL).
Double time
Double time is twice your regular rate. Some employers, union contracts and state rules do. Pick Double time in the calculator, or type your own rate.
Common overtime calculation mistakes
- Adding overtime hours to regular hours. Enter them in Overtime Hours so they get the higher rate.
- Averaging two weeks. Overtime is per workweek.
- Using 1.5 × total hours. Only the hours over 40 get the overtime rate.
- Expecting the overtime deduction on your check. It comes at tax time.
Overtime on your pay stub
On a pay stub, overtime sits on its own line with hours, rate and amount. YTD (year-to-date) gross pay includes it. Lenders who count overtime often want to see it over time, not in one check. See pay stubs for a mortgage.
FAQ
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate. Then multiply by your overtime hours. At $20.00 an hour, 10 overtime hours pay $300.00.
What is time and a half?
Pay at 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $20.00 an hour, time and a half is $30.00 an hour.
How much is time and a half for $15 an hour?
$22.50 an hour. Multiply any rate by 1.5 to get it.
When do I get overtime?
Under federal law, most hourly workers get overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states also count long days: California, Alaska and Nevada (for lower-paid workers) after 8 hours, Colorado after 12.
Do I get time and a half on holidays?
Not under federal law. The U.S. Department of Labor says the FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, unless those hours are over 40 in the workweek. Holiday pay is up to your employer or contract.
Does overtime count per week or per pay period?
Per workweek under federal law. Hours are not averaged over two or more weeks, so a biweekly check can include overtime from one week only.
What is double time?
Pay at twice the regular rate. Some employers, union contracts or state rules pay it for some hours. Use the Double time button to set it.
Do salaried workers get overtime?
Some do. It depends on the job and the pay. Ask your employer or your state labor office.
Can I change the overtime rate?
Yes. Type your own rate if your job pays more than time and a half.
