How to convert hourly pay to salary

Three numbers decide your yearly pay: what you earn an hour, how many hours you work in a week, and how many weeks a year you get paid for.

  1. 1

    Hours in a year

    Hours a week × paid weeks. Full time: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.

  2. 2

    Times your rate

    $25.00 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year, before tax.

  3. 3

    Split it up

    Monthly: yearly ÷ 12 = $4,333.33. Every two weeks: rate × 80 hours = $2,000.00.

A shortcut you can do in your head

Double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $25.00 an hour is close to $50,000 a year. The real full-time figure is a little higher ($52,000), because a year has 2,080 work hours, not 2,000.

Part-time hours and unpaid weeks

Fewer hours a week

Use the hours you really work in a normal week. If they change, use an average over a few months. $18.00 an hour for 25 hours a week is $18.00 × 25 × 52 = $23,400 a year.

Weeks without pay

Paid vacation and paid holidays count as paid weeks, so keep 52. Take weeks off only for time you are not paid, like a seasonal layoff or unpaid leave. At $22.00 an hour, 50 paid weeks give $44,000 instead of $45,760.

Change Hours per Week and Paid Weeks per Year in the calculator. The after-tax lines follow.

Hourly job or salaried job: what else to compare

  • Overtime. Hourly workers covered by federal law earn at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek (U.S. Department of Labor). Some salaried jobs are exempt from overtime, so long weeks may pay nothing extra.
  • Paid time off. Ask how many holidays and vacation days are paid. Unpaid days lower the yearly figure.
  • Steady hours. A salary pays the same each check. Hourly pay moves with your schedule.
  • Benefits. Health insurance and 401(k) come out before tax and change your take-home pay.

Monthly income for a rental or loan form

Forms often ask for gross monthly income. Take the yearly figure and divide by 12. At $25.00 an hour full time that is $4,333.33, not $4,000.00 (weekly × 4).

Many landlords then ask for proof. Recent pay stubs with year-to-date totals show the same rate and hours. See pay stubs for an apartment.

Mistakes that skew the yearly number

  • Using 2,000 hours instead of 2,080 for a full-time year.
  • Multiplying weekly pay by 4 for a month.
  • Taking paid vacation out of the year. Only unpaid weeks come out.
  • Adding overtime as regular hours. Overtime pays a different rate.
  • Treating the yearly salary as money in the bank. Tax comes out first.

FAQ

How do I convert hourly pay to a yearly salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by your hours in a week, then by the weeks you are paid in a year. Full time is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.

$25 an hour is how much a year?

$52,000 before tax at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. That is $4,333.33 a month.

$20 an hour is how much a year?

$41,600 before tax for a full-time year. In Texas, which has no state income tax, you keep about $35,605 after tax (single, 2026 rules).

$15 an hour is how much a year?

$31,200 before tax for a full-time year, or $2,600.00 a month.

How many work hours are in a year?

2,080 for a full-time job: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. Paid holidays and vacation are part of those hours.

How do I turn a salary into an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by 2,080. A $60,000 salary is $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week.

Is the salary figure before or after tax?

The big number is before tax. The after-tax lines under it take federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and your state's tax out of each week's pay, then add up the year.

Does it count overtime?

No. It uses the same hours every week at one rate. If you often work over 40 hours a week, the overtime calculator shows what those hours add.

Why is my monthly pay not my weekly pay times 4?

A year has 52 weeks, about 4.33 a month. Weekly pay × 4 leaves out about a month of pay each year. Divide the yearly figure by 12 instead.
