How many pay stubs do you need for a car loan?
Each lender sets its own number. Many ask for your most recent stubs. Some ask for stubs only if your credit or income needs a closer look. Call ahead or check the lender's site, and bring stubs that show year-to-date totals.
No pay stubs? What dealers accept instead
If you don't get pay stubs, ask the lender which of these they take:
- Last year's tax return
- Recent bank statements that show regular deposits
- 1099 forms from clients or apps
- App earnings statements, for gig drivers
- An offer letter, for a new job
- Benefit letters, such as a Social Security benefit letter
Lenders differ, so ask before you go.
The dealer-ready checklist
- Driver's license or other photo ID
- Proof of income: recent pay stubs, or tax returns and bank statements if self-employed
- Proof of address: a utility bill or bank statement in your name
- Proof of insurance, or the details to set it up
- Trade-in papers: title or loan payoff details, if trading in
- Down payment: how you'll pay it
Keep them in one folder, paper or on your phone.
Self-employed or new job?
Self-employed or 1099
Lenders often want last year's tax return and recent bank statements. A stub showing a steady monthly draw can sit on top of those.
New job
An offer letter with your pay and start date often helps until your first check arrives.
Check the payment against your take-home pay
Before you agree to a monthly payment, work out what you actually bring home. Remember insurance, fuel and upkeep come on top of the payment.
