How a salary becomes take-home pay
Your offer letter shows one yearly number. Each check is smaller, for four reasons. The salary paycheck calculator above goes through them in order.
- 1
Split the salary into checks
Yearly salary ÷ checks a year: 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 twice-a-month, 12 monthly.
- 2
Take out pre-tax deductions
401(k) and most health plans come out first, so you pay less tax.
- 3
Take out taxes
Federal income tax from your W-4, Social Security 6.2% and Medicare 1.45% (IRS Pub 15), then state tax where your state has one.
- 4
What you keep
Net pay. It should match the deposit in your bank.

Single, married or head of household
Your W-4 filing status changes how much federal tax comes out of each check. Same $75,000 salary in Texas, paid every two weeks:
| W-4 status | Federal tax per check | Take-home per check | Take-home per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $295.00 | $2,368.94 | $61,592 |
| Married filing jointly | $178.46 | $2,485.48 | $64,622 |
| Head of household | $221.08 | $2,442.86 | $63,514 |
Pick the status on your W-4. Extra withholding from W-4 Step 4(c) goes in its own box in the calculator.
401(k) and health insurance lower your tax
Pre-tax money comes out before income tax is worked out. Put $150.00 a check into a 401(k) on a $75,000 salary in Texas, and your check drops by $117.00, not $150.00. The rest is tax you no longer pay on that check.
A 401(k) lowers income tax, but Social Security and Medicare are still taken on that money (IRS Pub 15). Health insurance paid through a Section 125 (cafeteria) plan lowers both (IRS Pub 15-B). Enter both in the calculator to see your own lines.
How often you are paid
The pay schedule sets the size of each check, not your yearly pay. Twice a month gives 24 checks; every two weeks gives 26, so each is a little smaller. Change Pay Frequency in the calculator to compare. For a full side-by-side, see the biweekly paycheck calculator.
What a salary pay stub shows
- Salary for the period on one line, with no hours or rate.
- Each tax on its own line: federal, Social Security, Medicare and state.
- Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) and health insurance.
- Year-to-date totals next to each line, which landlords and lenders look at.
- Net pay, the amount paid into your account.

3 salary pay stubs · $8.97 →Common salary paycheck mistakes
- Dividing a yearly salary by 24 when you are paid every two weeks. That is 26 checks.
- Typing your monthly salary while “Amount is” says Per Year.
- Choosing married because you are married, when your W-4 says single.
- Leaving out 401(k) or health insurance.
- Comparing your take-home with a friend’s in another state. State tax differs a lot.
FAQ
How do I calculate my paycheck from my salary?
Divide your yearly salary by the number of checks you get in a year (26 if you are paid every two weeks). Take out pre-tax deductions, then federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and state tax. What is left is your take-home pay.
What is $75,000 a year after taxes?
About $61,592 a year, or $2,368.94 per biweekly check, in Texas (no state income tax), filing single with no pre-tax deductions, 2026 rules. Pick your state above for your own number.
How much is $60,000 a year per month after taxes?
About $4,199.15 a month in Texas, single. That is the yearly take-home divided by 12.
How much tax comes out of a salary paycheck?
Social Security and Medicare are fixed shares of pay. Federal and state income tax depend on your salary, W-4 and state. The calculator lists each one so you see the split.
Does my pay schedule change my yearly take-home?
Hardly. Weekly, biweekly, twice-a-month and monthly checks are sized differently, but the year adds up to about the same.
Should I choose single or married on the calculator?
Choose what your W-4 says, not how you plan to file your return. Head of household is there too.
Can I enter my salary per check instead of per year?
Yes. Switch “Amount is” to Per Paycheck and type the gross amount from one check.
Why is my real check different?
Your employer may take local tax, extra withholding or other deductions such as dental or a union fee. Add 401(k) and health insurance here to get closer.
Does the salary paycheck calculator include bonuses?
No. It shows a regular check. Bonuses are often withheld in a different way, so a bonus check can look different.
Is this salary calculator free?
Yes. No account and no email. You only pay if you turn the result into a pay stub.
