Take-home pay $1,587.33 per biweekly check in Hawaii.

An estimate from what you entered, using 2026 federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax withholding for a Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T), plus the state’s disability or paid leave line where it has one. City, county and school district taxes are not included. Not tax advice.

What comes out of a Hawaii paycheck

Short answer: from each Hawaii check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), Hawaii state withholding, and the HI TDI line. Hawaii has one of the longest bracket ladders in the country and a temporary disability insurance (TDI) line that employers may take from pay, up to a weekly cap.

LineRule for 2026
Federal income taxSet by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T)
Social Security6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500
Medicare1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000
Hawaii income tax1.4% to 7.9% in 8 brackets
HI TDI0.5% of every dollar of wages; capped at $7.50 a week. Some employers pay it for you.

From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.

How Hawaii withholding is worked out in 2026

Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the brackets and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.

  • The withholding formula subtracts a standard deduction of $4,350 a year before the rates apply.
  • Each allowance or exemption you claim takes another $1,144 a year off taxable wages.

$36,000$48,0007.2%
$48,000$125,0007.6%

Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.

Hawaii disability, paid leave and other state deductions

These lines are not income tax, so they show separately on a Hawaii stub. Each one is worked out from gross wages.

  • HI TDI (Hawaii Temporary Disability Insurance): 0.5% of every dollar of wages; capped at $7.50 a week. Some employers pay it for you.

Reading the tax lines on a Hawaii pay stub

Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a Hawaii stub, and what each one is.

  • FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
  • OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
  • MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
  • HI SIT or HI W/H: Hawaii state income tax.
  • HI TDI: Hawaii Temporary Disability Insurance.

Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.

Why your actual check may not match

  • Your W-4 (plus any Hawaii state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
  • Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
  • Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
  • Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
