An estimate from what you entered, using 2026 federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare and state income tax withholding for a Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T), plus the state’s disability or paid leave line where it has one. City, county and school district taxes are not included. Not tax advice.
What comes out of a New York paycheck
Short answer: from each New York check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), New York state withholding, the NY PFL line, and the NY SDI line. New York stacks a long bracket ladder with Paid Family Leave and disability (DBL) deductions, and residents of New York City or Yonkers owe city tax on top.
| Line | Rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | Set by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T) |
| Social Security | 6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000 |
| New York income tax | 3.9% to 7.35% in 10 brackets |
| NY PFL | 0.432% of every dollar of wages; the most taken in a year is $411.91. |
| NY SDI | 0.5% of every dollar of wages; capped at $0.60 a week. Some employers pay it for you. |
From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.
From January 1, 2027, NY PFL becomes 0.452% of every dollar of wages; the most taken in a year is $451.81.
How New York withholding is worked out in 2026
Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the brackets and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.
- The withholding formula subtracts a standard deduction of $7,400 a year before the rates apply.
- Each allowance or exemption you claim takes another $1,000 a year off taxable wages.
New York tax brackets for a single filer (2026)
| Taxable income from | Up to | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | $8,500 | 3.9% |
| $8,500 | $11,700 | 4.4% |
| $11,700 | $13,900 | 5.15% |
| $13,900 | $80,650 | 5.4% |
| $80,650 | $96,800 | 5.9% |
| $96,800 | $107,650 | 7.03% |
| $107,650 | $157,650 | 7.53% |
| $157,650 | $215,400 | 6.4% |
| $215,400 | $265,400 | 11.44% |
| $265,400 | and up | 7.35% |
Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.

New York disability, paid leave and other state deductions
These lines are not income tax, so they show separately on a New York stub. Each one is worked out from gross wages.
- NY PFL (New York Paid Family Leave): 0.432% of every dollar of wages; the most taken in a year is $411.91.
- NY SDI (New York State Disability (DBL)): 0.5% of every dollar of wages; capped at $0.60 a week. Some employers pay it for you.
Local taxes in New York
New York City and Yonkers tax their residents' wages, and Yonkers also taxes nonresidents who work there. The calculator leaves city tax out, so a NYC or Yonkers check will be lower than shown.
Worked example: one New York paycheck
Two common cases, paid every two weeks, filing single, no pre-tax deductions, 2026 rules: $20 an hour for 80 hours, and a $60,000 yearly salary. These numbers come from the same engine as the calculator, not from a rounded rule of thumb.

Reading the tax lines on a New York pay stub
Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a New York stub, and what each one is.
- FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
- OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
- MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
- NY SIT or NY W/H: New York state income tax.
- NY PFL: New York Paid Family Leave.
- NY SDI: New York State Disability (DBL).
Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.
Why your actual check may not match
- Your W-4 (plus any New York state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
- Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
- Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
- Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
- Local taxes that this calculator does not add, as described above.
