What comes out of a Ohio paycheck
Short answer: from each Ohio check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), and Ohio state withholding. Ohio's state brackets are low, but Ohio has more local income taxes than nearly any state: most cities and many school districts tax wages too.
| Line | Rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | Set by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T) |
| Social Security | 6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000 |
| Ohio income tax | 1.6% to 3.4% in 3 brackets |
From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.
How Ohio withholding is worked out in 2026
Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the brackets and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.
- Each allowance or exemption you claim takes another $650 a year off taxable wages.
Ohio tax brackets for a single filer (2026)
| Taxable income from | Up to | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | $26,050 | 1.6% |
| $26,050 | $100,000 | 2.99% |
| $100,000 | and up | 3.4% |
Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.

Reading the tax lines on a Ohio pay stub
Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a Ohio stub, and what each one is.
- FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
- OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
- MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
- OH SIT or OH W/H: Ohio state income tax.
Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.
Why your actual check may not match
- Your W-4 (plus any Ohio state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
- Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
- Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
- Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
- Local taxes that this calculator does not add, as described above.
