What comes out of a South Carolina paycheck
Short answer: from each South Carolina check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), and South Carolina state withholding. South Carolina's withholding formula takes a standard deduction worth ten percent of wages up to a cap, then a short bracket ladder.
| Line | Rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | Set by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T) |
| Social Security | 6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000 |
| South Carolina income tax | 0% to 6% in 3 brackets |
From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.
How South Carolina withholding is worked out in 2026
Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the brackets and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.
- The withholding formula subtracts a standard deduction of $NaN a year before the rates apply.
- Each allowance or exemption you claim takes another $5,000 a year off taxable wages.
South Carolina tax brackets for a single filer (2026)
| Taxable income from | Up to | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | $3,640 | 0% |
| $3,640 | $18,230 | 3% |
| $18,230 | and up | 6% |
Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lowers your take-home pay.

Reading the tax lines on a South Carolina pay stub
Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a South Carolina stub, and what each one is.
- FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
- OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
- MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
- SC SIT or SC W/H: South Carolina state income tax.
Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.
Why your actual check may not match
- Your W-4 (plus any South Carolina state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
- Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
- Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
- Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
