What comes out of a Utah paycheck
Short answer: from each Utah check your employer takes federal withholding, the two FICA taxes (Social Security plus Medicare), and Utah state withholding. Utah applies one flat rate and then subtracts a base allowance that fades as wages rise.
| Line | Rule for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | Set by your pay, pay schedule and Form W-4 (IRS Pub 15-T) |
| Social Security | 6.2% until yearly wages reach $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once yearly wages pass $200,000 |
| Utah income tax | A flat 4.45% |
From January 1, 2027, the Social Security line stops once 2027 wages reach $192,300.
How Utah withholding is worked out in 2026
Your employer does not simply multiply your pay by a rate. It turns the check into a yearly figure, takes off the deductions in the state formula, applies the flat rate and divides back down to one pay period. That is the same method the calculator above follows, for a single filer.

Worked example: one Utah paycheck
Two common cases, paid every two weeks, filing single, no pre-tax deductions, 2026 rules: $20 an hour for 80 hours, and a $60,000 yearly salary. These numbers come from the same engine as the calculator, not from a rounded rule of thumb.
| Line | $20/hour | $60,000 salary |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $1,600.00 | $2,307.69 |
| Federal income tax | $108.15 | $193.08 |
| Social Security | $99.20 | $143.08 |
| Medicare | $23.20 | $33.46 |
| Utah income tax | $68.67 | $102.69 |
| Take-home pay | $1,300.78 | $1,835.38 |

Utah take-home pay by hourly rate
Full time (80 hours every two weeks), single filer. Divide take-home by 80 for your hourly pay after tax.
| Hourly rate | Gross per check | Take-home per check | After-tax hourly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $1,200.00 | $1,002.38 | $12.53 |

Same $60,000 salary, different pay schedules
More checks a year means smaller checks, but the yearly total barely moves. Here is how the Utah salary example splits by schedule.
| Pay schedule | Checks a year | Gross per check | Take-home per check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,153.85 | $917.69 |
| Every 2 weeks | 26 | $2,307.69 | $1,835.38 |
| Twice a month | 24 | $2,500.00 | $1,988.33 |
| Monthly | 12 | $5,000.00 | $3,976.67 |

Reading the tax lines on a Utah pay stub
Pay stubs label the same deductions in different ways. These are the names you are most likely to see on a Utah stub, and what each one is.
- FIT or Fed W/H: federal income tax withheld from your W-4.
- OASDI or SS: Social Security, 6.2% of your pay.
- MED or Medicare: 1.45% of your pay.
- UT SIT or UT W/H: Utah state income tax.
Each line has a current amount and a year-to-date (YTD) amount. Landlords and lenders read the YTD column to check that your pay is steady.
Why your actual check may not match
- Your W-4 (plus any Utah state form) may claim a different status, dependents or extra withholding.
- Health insurance, a 401(k) or an HSA come out before tax and lower the taxable amount.
- Bonuses and commissions are often withheld at a supplemental rate instead.
- Once yearly wages pass $184,500, Social Security stops for the rest of the year (wage base).
